Televsion personality Paula Deen’s recent disclosure that she has type 2 diabetes has created quite a frenzy as of late ... but HLN’s Dr. Drew has someone of different take.
“Paula Deen is entitled to confidentiality as it pertains to her health care,” he says. “She has no obligation to share anything about her health care with anyone … she’s advocating a certain culture and certain kind of eating. She’s entitled to do that … I just think our reaction has been too impulsive and unthoughtful.”

Dr. Drew will talk a lot more about the issue tonight at 9 pm. ET/PT on HLN. Also be sure to follow the show on Twitter @DrDrewHLN.
Take the test. There are four simple questions. Give honest answers.
Do the cases of missing children who are white get more attention from the media and law enforcement, than those involving children of color? Dr. Drew and his guests discuss two missing African American girls and why we haven't heard more about them in the news.
Then, meth and murder. A woman killed three members of her family and then herself after using methamphetamine. Former user Todd Bridges joins Dr. Drew to talk about what people experience on meth and why the reality of what they are doing doesn't register, until it's too late.
Plus, the Paula Deen diabetes controversy! The very public TV cook waited for years to tell her audience about a private health concern. In the meantime, she continued to make fat-laden, sugar-coated food for her television audience. Is anything wrong with this picture? You might be surprised to hear what Dr. Drew thinks.
Watch Dr. Drew tonight and every weeknight at 9 on HLN.
On Wednesday night, Dr. Drew talked to the Sheboygan, Wisconsin mayor who admits that he was a binge drinker and alcoholic.
Bob Ryan, a first-term mayor, says he is in recovery and has not touched a drink in six months. But could the problems with his public intoxication ruin his career?
Ryan, a husband and father of three, is the target of a recall election. He survived the first round this week, getting more votes than the seven other candidates.
“I want to disclose my bias on this right away,” Dr. Drew told Ryan. “I have a lot of strong feelings about the disease of alcoholism, and I think when you stigmatize and treat somebody differently because they have the disease of alcoholism anymore than they had the disease of cancer, the disease of pneumonia, or the disease diabetes, you’re out of line.”
Ryan told Dr. Drew that his problem of alcoholism has never affected his performance on the job.
“I`ve never missed a day of work due to alcohol,” he stated. “I can say I`ve never drank at work. I’ve never gone to work intoxicated. However, it has affected my public image, and public image as a mayor - they hold you up to a higher standard than the normal person and some of my behavior out in public has not been acceptable to me or some of my constituents.”
Dr. Drew mentioned, “for men, particularly - male alcoholics - the job is actually the last thing affected by their alcoholism. By the time the alcoholism is so severe that it affects their job, they`re in pretty serious trouble at that point.”
Ryan’s wife, Mary, added “I think the majority of people in the city of Sheboygan are very compassionate. It`s those few that, I guess, I really can’t understand how anyone could treat another human being as a few have … I don`t understand it at all."
