Doctors still baffled by teen mystery illness

All week long, HLN's Dr. Drew has been coordinating with a team of experts searching for answers for a group teenage girls suffering from the same mysterious illness that's causing Tourette-like outbursts, twitching and uncontrollable movements.

Parents of six of the girls from LeRoy Junior-Senior High School in New York met this past weekend and agreed they want some sort of cohesive team, perhaps one physician, who has expertise in this area.

However, tension continues to grow as different specialists disagree on the possible causes of this condition.

The New York State Department of Health say they have been investigating the case apparently for more than three months and found no cause for the illness.

“What we want to do is to put together support for the best treatment possible for the girls … I think if we can get the girls into the right kind of routine … with a little more support and focus, we have a real avenue of hope,” psychiatrist Dr. John Sharp told Dr. Drew Wednesday night.

Some doctors initially believed the diagnosis was conversion disorder.

“A conversion disorder is a condition you show psychological stress in physical ways to describe a health problem that starts as a mental or emotional crisis, a scary or stressful incident of some kind, and converts to physical problems,” Dr. Drew explained.

Dr. Laszlo Metchtler of the Dent Neurologic Institute, who diagnosed some of these girls with conversion added, “What shocked us was that in the following two, three months, then further patients started showing up to our office after being evaluated in the region and at that time our evaluation went from conversion disorder to mass psychogenic illness."

Hear the doctors describe other possibilities that may be causing the girls’ illness in the video clip above.

Watch Dr. Drew weeknights at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on HLN and follow the show on Twitter @DrDrewHLN.

Is there any possibility this illness could be caused by some sort of parasite that attacks the brain?

Check the school for mold. Toxic mold! Perhaps the link is a certain classroom or they sat near a particular vent or damp corner in a room. I teach and in one 'newer' building they've been working on the same roof leak for six years. Imagine were that water has been traveling, pooling and stagnating over our heads. Yes I have chronic asthma and infections.

      Dr. Drew,

I have notices that all the children involved are girls I find that to be very interesting, I'm sure the boys eat the same food drink the same water and play on the grounds outside probably more than the girl. What is your take on this? Thank you for any feed back you can give.

Is there a possibility that these kids smoked something that was laced with something bad. Or took pills that they weren't 100% sure what they were? Were they tested for any drugs in their system?

Dr Drew, besides PANDAs or PANS being a real possible factor for these girls, has any one looked into these teenage girls possibly having recently had the HPV Vacciantion? ( Or possible any other near recent vaccination)?

That wouldn't make sence because alot of girls get the gardasil shot at 12 years and the reports are all at the same school it has to be a contagious virus or poison...

WOW! Someone who sounds like they are on track! I guarantee this is a reaction from the HPV vaccine. Now getting the precious medical profession to admit it, is a whole another story. They will lose too much money if the they admit to that! I hope someone checks to see if the vaccine was administered to these girls!

Thank you Dr. Drew for asserting that it is most likely at least some of these cases do indeed have a biological cause. I feel for these girls and their parents and applaud them for continuing to search for this cause.
One of the neurologists on the show last night stated that some of the girls had MRIs and EEGs done, and the results were normal. It is my understanding that if PANDAS or PANS were the cause, it would not show up on an MRI. Have any doctors considered doing a PET scan? Dr. Harry Chugani in Detriot has been utilizing PET scans for PANDAS patients, as this is the only test that will show inflammation in the basal ganglia, the area of the brain affected by PANDAS. I hope that this information is helpful and I am hopeful that by having a PANDAS expert involved in the girls care it will shed some light on this issue. I am shocked that the neurologists on the show last night did not discuss PANDAS as a possible diagnosis. I feel for the girls and their parents, especially the one girl who stated she was not under stress when her symptoms came on. We believe you- you are not crazy. Keep searching for answers!

I am a mother of a PANDAS child and it is terrifying to watch her daily suffer this horrific disease! I agree with your comment 100% Honey...The basal ganglia suffers with this disease as it is "attacked" during the flare ups and I have been following this story from the beginning and prayed that they could hear our cries that PANDAS needed to be tested for. Thank God we have open minded Doctors who are not willing to accept a diagnosis of "let's say it's this, because of lack of any other cause". Any one who has a child with this knows that these poor girls are going to get worse and it is heartbreaking to see so many of them suffering with this :(

Could it be a side effect from the HPV Vaccine? It seems that only the girls in the High School are afftected. Teachers and boys are not having any symptoms.

Dr. Drew, Concerning the teens with the mysterious illness. We are all being constantly bombarded with ever increasing electro-magnetic field of radiation. Some of us are more sensitive to EMF than others depending on the immune system.
The EMF effects brain waves. Could an expert take EMF radiation readings both at the school and at the homes of the girls involved as a possible cause of this illness?

Kudos to Dr. Drew for bringing this public awareness. My daughter has PANDAS or PANDAS and I believe this kids have it as well. It was likely triggered by a super bug that hit their area. It's ashame how Dr. Trifiletti got cut off. It was old news to hear from the other doctors have said and too bad that Dr. Trifiletti's opinion could not be shared in greater depth. If there are 13-16 kits in the small town of Leroy, imagine how many there are in the rest of the US.

Contrary to what Dr. Drew says, there IS a lot a doctor can do to treat PANDAS in a child. We would know more if there was not this pervasive hubris in the medical field and unwillingness to change or advance knowledge.

Possibly, along the lines of PANDA, my daughter when she was 17 had an average case of mononucleosis. However she was going out for the tennis team and pushed her body during the tryouts. A few weeks after the mono she was so, so tired and required 12 – 17 hours of sleep for almost a year. Went to all kinds of doctors, neurologists, psychiatrist, had mri's, sleep studies, all kind of tests, nothing came up. The only that cured it was we finally put her on a time release small dosage of adderal so she could have a normal junior year in high school. Over time, we eased off the medication and she was and has been fine. She does have very sensitive lymph nodes and feels and knows when she is getting sick early. A blessing because she wasn't able to party hard like so many other college kids. Sorry, for the rambling. But we felt so all alone. Then upon talking to people I have run into people that a virus has caused them serious complications afterward. So, just a thought – an after effect after a virus?

If this was the 1990's your daughter would have been diagnosed with 'chronic fatigue syndrome' which is another 'garbage' diagnosis. In the year 1988 in late summer very early fall my husband and myself took a day trip to LE ROY NEW YORK from Buffalo NY and stayed the entire day there. We ate there, we walked through fields and woods there. We went down the the creek, ate Amish prepared pies, and had a picnic on an open field. When we came back to Buffalo something was wrong with us. I was had a lot of neurological symptoms that I never had before and after a week, it got worse and worse.. BUT NOT JUST ME.. both of us. My husband and myself. The terrible doctors here in Buffalo and one at DENT neurology did not believe us.. just the same thing as they are doing to these girls. We were eventually diagnosed with the garbage diagnosis of 'Chronic Fatigue syndrome' even though my chief complaint never had anything to do with being 'tired' or fatigued. I felt like I was poisoned by something is what it felt like. My whole nervous system went haywire. One of the biggest problems for these girls is the INCOMPETANT DOCTORS THAT ARE IN WESTERN NEW YORK. We have a huge problem here with money hungry doctors who just want to take the easy way out. No matter what happens to you here in the Buffalo area, you could never sue them because they all stick up for each other and they all lie for each other. No professionalism at all in this area at all when it comes to 'health care' I think the Buffalo area has the worst health care in the entire country. If I was them, I would see a doctor in NYC who does not feel the NEED or requirement to STICK UP for these two losers from Dent neurology.

My son was also diagnosed with PANDAS. He didnt show any signs of illiness but once he was given the antibiotics the tic was gone in 5 days. He has had this 2 times now (over a 4 year span) both cleared up once the antibiotics were given. These poor girls dealing with this for so long. Why wouldnt you just try a round of antibiotics. I agree with Heidi, I wish Dr. Triffletti wasnt cut off in his interview. How about the girls who sneezed 1200 times a day or the girls who hiccuped I believe those were all related to PANDAS and have stopped once treated. Ive heard enough about conversion disorder where has that gotten them? Too bad they all went to the same doctor. 2nd and 3rd opinions are huge. Thank you Dr. Drew for wanting to follow this until resolution. I find it very interesting.

LeRoy in known as the Jello capital but what some don't know is that the town was a major manufacturer of chemicals in the 19th century including rat poisoning with strychnine (Rough on Rats was the actual product). Could there still be pockets of toxic chemicals at manufacture and dump sites. The 1st cases were reported in summer and early fall. Connection in these girls from outdoor recreation? Still strange that no boys were affected...

There is nothing worse seeing someone you love suffer. I offer my two cents here:

While I am most definately not a medical expert by any stretch, a recent (similar) reaction my wife had after surgey gave me cause for thought. Initally the physicians who were in charge of her care had never seen this before and did not know what it was. They however decided to start with the basics instead of looking for something complicated: a full blood work up. The result was that her potasium and magnesium levels were low, and combined with the recent levels of stress, could be the problem. Within hours of IV and antibiotic treatment for these low levels in her natural body chemistry, she was back to normal. She has had no similar episodes since.

Some numbers need to examined. I would like to see what the cholesterol levels are for these girls. Are they quite high or quite low? More importantly, are they on any kind of cholesterol reducing medication? Also the families can try a very inexpensive experiment. Go to some place like Walmart and purchase a few bottles of Tonic Water. It can be either diet or regular sugar types. But it must say on the label that it contains Quinine. Have each girl drink about half a glass of the tonic water four times per day for about three days and see if there are changes to the errratic movements. The tonic water only costs about a dollar per one liter bottle. It that helps, you are on the right track. If it works I will tell you more about the procedure.

I am a father of an 8 year old boy who has similar symptoms, but which manifested after a bout of strep. He was not under stress or anything else like this this mass conversion label. It is a biological agent which caused his tics and mood swings. We took him to see Dr. K after our neurologist diagnosed PANDAS. Antibiotics seem to help tremendously. We had an IVIG treatment performed a few months after the diagnosis. it was like flipping the switch and turning off most of the tics and mood swings as well as getting rid of the separation anxiety and reducing our son's symptoms by about 90 percent.
Dr. Trifiletti's opinion should be the one taken in this case and his counsel should be aggressively sought out, since he is a PANDAS expert.

These girls obviously have PANDAS/PANS or Sydenham's Chorea. Did the Dent doctors even bother to test the girls for infectious triggers (mycoplasma, strep, mono etc), or did they just run MRI's and EEG's? I find it unbelieveable that "experts" would check the SCHOOL for infection but neglect to test the GIRLS themselves.

The doctors from Dent also said that an EEG showed the girls' seizures were not "real" seizures. This is consistent with Sydenham's Chorea or PANDAS (or other post-infectious syndromes associated with anti-basal ganglia antibodies) where patients can have seizure-like episodes (pseudo-seizures) or dystonia. http://jnnp.bmj.com/content/75/6/914.full

Dr. Drew.–get involved... order the Cunningham Test (CaM Kinase II) to help differentiate PANDAS from non-PANDAS tics, check anti-neuronal and anti-basal ganglia antibodies, get tested by a LLMD, re-establish if all girls were vaccinated at the same time by a potential hot lot vaccine.....btw, Dr. Drew.... Mass Psychogenic Illness....how can you have these jokers on your show–I know that you're smarter than that....heck, girls if you're reading this try some Olive Leaf Extract for a week–if the symptoms subside-there is a viral/bacterial component

My Daughter has PANDAS/PANS, and when this is disorder is finally recognized by the established medical community, It's going to be obvious that much of Freud's ideas are theoretical hogwash. Just because it isn't obvious what is effecting these girls, doesn't mean it is conversion disorder. I think most logical people would accept an unspecified diagnosis rather than assuming that it is in their heads. I'm very disappointed in the amount of time that Dr. Drew spent on conversion disorder considering that every other show covering this has beat that horse to death. Aren't we past possession and witchcraft?–conversion disorder just sounds like a modern spin on the same old trash. Can't the medical establishment admit that they don't know? This is hubris of the worst kind, and it is adding to the suffering of these families. Imagine being a teen who is ticcing, and then told that it's all in your head? These doctors should be ashamed of themselves.

I also want to reinforce what Michelle posted above about Dr. Chugani's specialized MRI"s. Please...Please pass this information on to the families...it is so very important work.

How about birth control? A contaminated batch from a school nurse or planned parenthood? What about being drugged from a common source to each girl? Was it an act of vengeance? A prank gone wrong? TWO of the girls said they woke up from a "nap". How many others took a "nap" and had the same process happen?? Did they ingest something that made them sleepy to begin with?? There must be some kind of LINK between them during that month of October. I hope they have all gotten together as a group to discuss the possibilities of a unknown link! This is so tragic and hope that someone is also going to test each one of these teens for heavy metals, and possibly brain scans, & toxicology reports! My heart goes out to all the families being effected by this and hope you get answers FAST!!!!

The town has a Superfund site, recently put on the National Priorities List. There are other hazardous sites within a few mile radius. Has there been any cleanup activity in the last year that may have triggered the release of heavy metals or something? Any new construction in the girls' locker room as opposed to another area of the school? For example in my school the opening for the artesan well was in the girls showers so we got to enjoy the waterbugs. I find the "hysteria" diagnoses too convenient & too quick & too much like 16th century Salem.

After reading these responses to Dr. Drew's show and those on the CNN website, I would be interested in the environmental factors such as pharmaceuticals in the water (there are pharmaceutical companies at both Le Roy, NY and Roanoke, VA area) and add those RX combined with other medications or vaccines that girls were taking could cause these effects. I was curious and I searched for basal ganglia treatments online. A substance like Levo-Dopa (treats Parkinsons) if taken too long or at high doses OR with other medications could have similar issues as these girls. Water treatment plants aren't using reverse osmosis nor trying to rid our water of such chemicals they we think are harmless. Think about the medicines you take as well that your body expels into the public water system. And no telling what the pharmaceutical companies are putting into the water as they create our wonder drugs. More research, more research!

I saw the show last week that showed kids with strange neuro symptoms. I suffer from a rare disorder that looks similalar to the symptoms displayed called Dystonia. When I first got it I also had "seizures" called dystonic storms. There are a number of faces to this strange illness and there are no test that can determine the diagnosis. Many dystonics describe that early in their illness history doctors say they have conversion dysorder (me included). I take Levodopa and Artane and had deep brain stimulation brain surgery that got rid of most of my symptoms. Though the illness can be hereditary (my mom had it) I can't explain why a group of girls might get it though environmental factors might trigger the illness though one has to be predisposed. I had been on Prozac for 30 years and took prescription diet pills that i feel triggered mine. The Dept of Disease Control need to not sweep it under the rug. There are so many strange chemicals in our food and environment, who knows. I get really bad reactions around bug spray myself. I worked in inpatient mental health for 35 years and know conversion disorder exists. I do know that doctors use this way to often in neuro disorders when they have no explanation as there is no test to determine it. When I was told that my illness was "all in my head" I didn't know weather to laugh or cry. Several months of therapy at least showed that I did have Dystonia but don't tell me there was no stigma attached to it. If these kids do opt to seek therapy I would recommend that they take full advantage of it whether or not the outcome because the goal is the same...get rid of this thing whatever label you want to slap on it. Good luck to all! JB THE JBRWOK

Could this be Birth Control Related since they are all girls? Is the school they go to New or old and what was it built on? Have the building supplies been tested? I dont buy it for 1 minute what the Drs are saying they have. Give me a break, all 12 girls at once, so they think we are THAT stupid to buy that story? Im embarassed for all the Drs that diagnosed that ridiculous diagnosis. How far of a Mile radius do all these girls live to the school? If it were "THEIR" kid, they would be thinking differently and looking into every possibility. Its just like a Dr to call it a name and not get to the Real root of the problem. I feel SO SORRY for all these 12 girls what a horror story to say the least. Someone needs to do something about this.

These "uncontrollable" jerks, are VERY familiar to me!!
I am 63 yr's old, and in 1989 was diagnosed with EHS (aka) "Exploding Head Syndrome".
The reason I am bringing this up, is because of one of the most recent girls I just saw on Debra Norvalls show.
The girl explained what it felt like, as soon as she mentioned "electrical feeling going through her body" it hit me.
As that is how my EHS initially started. EHS is indeed a (not so rare) condition, but still experience episodes if I do not stay on meds. thought it would be worth mentioning, as it was a neurologist that diagnosed me.

My daughter has been having all the exact same symtoms, she has been sick for a year now. It started out she had a breast infection and was put on kflex and helped. so then about a month goes by take her dentist to get a filling and she had a horrible reaction to the liticaine. We got home from dentist and she had seizure like symtoms. my daughter has not been the same since and her symtoms are getting worse. Horrible electric shock feeling in her body, blue hands, red lines on her arms that come out of no where, and her heart will go from 80 to 150 while shes sitting and relaxed. We also have had MRI,S, CT scans, EEG with 3 day monitoring and a afib to monitor heart. The specialists that we have seen our saying that are not seizures but seizure like, (psdo seizures). The Drs put her on Floriniff and Topamax and she has not had a seizure in 2 weeks now, but still very tired and weak. My daughter was a cross country runner, played soccer and was a point guard on her Basketball team and has always been an A/B student. Now she can't do any of those things because of all this. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

It's terribly sad that people have to go through this and others accuse them of faking. This same thing happened to my son when he was 11 years old. It was terrifying and it took months for a doctor to figure out what was wrong. He was diagnosed with chorea and treated for it. He had Tourette Syndrome already but the chorea was much worse than his Tourette's alone. I am still so thankful to the doctor who was able to help him. It took a few months but he went right back to himself after medication. I feel for these girls and their parents. It's a really diffcult thing to watch your child suffering like that. My heart goes out to them. I pray someone finds the solution for them soon.

Dr. Drew – Shame on you for not giving Dr. Trifiletti more time to discuss P.A.N.D.A.S. as a serious consideration here. If your own child was suffering with these disorders you would not tolerate a BS mass hysteria explanation – you would demand to know the biological reason for their changed behavior. Dr. T has been on the forefront of defining this disorder for 10+ years and has tremendous knowledge regarding PANDAS – it demands more public awareness and education. If PANDAS is the ultimate diagnosis – it will all be evident in the girl's blood work. PANDAS is treatable and IVIG is absolutely an effective treatment. You are not educated enough about this disorder to make these false statements. Recovery is a long process and clearly evident by continued blood work: When you treat the infection – the symptoms go away. I've witnessed this first hand with my own teenage daughter. Dr. T diagnosed her with both elevated strep & mycoplasma bacterias that developed into PANDAS after a vaccine opened her blood brain barrier allowing the bacteria to enter and immediately resulted in severe neurological disorders. Dr. T gave us direction, she's received IVIG treatments and is now 100% recovered. Thank you Dr. T for your continued efforts to educate the public about PANDAS – you've given our daughter her life back. :)

Dr. Drew have there been any connections made with the vaccinations these girls had recently? I'm wondering if these symptoms could be the result of receiving this vaccination. Or, have they had the flu shot recently, is there any connection there?

CORRECTION: Dr. Drew have there been any connections made with the vaccinations these girls had recently? I'm wondering if these symptoms could be the result of receiving the HPV vaccination. Or, have they had the flu shot recently, is there any connection there?

My daughter had Chorea after a strep infection for which she did not properly take her antibiotics. Developed in to mild scarlet fever and then Chorea. Was treated with Haldol. The interesting and perhaps relevant part is that when taking birth control pills later for severe menstrual cramps she redeveloped Chorea. With cessation of the pills the chorea disappeared. Perhaps this will be helpful.

In the late summer, early fall of 1988 I went and stayed the whole day in LeRoy New York with my husband and later on that night and through the week we both ended up really sick with some kind of weird neurlogical symptoms, seizures, shaking, sweating, loss of balance etc, etc.... we were on the cover of the Buffalo Magazine in the paper and all over the tv shows and talk shows in Canada just like this. I still have the articles too. Anyway, these ASS-HOLE doctors in the Buffalo area treated us just as lousy as they are treating these girls. These lazy incompetant doctors in Buffalo NY do NOTHING but cover up for one another, snicker at the fact that they get away with murder, and coherse one another to cover up for each others charades. Trying to get healthcare in Buffalo is like walking into a stone wall THERE IS NO HEALTH CARE HERE.. it's all a sham. Here you see it show cased. What you see here with these loser doctors is just 'another day at the office'. Disgusting.

If it truly is Conversion Disorder then may I suggest a simple solution to prove or disprove the diagnosis? I suggest using Hypnosis on all of the people involved and if you can cure any of them through hypnosis then Conversion Disorder would be the correct diagnosis. not everyone can be hypnotized but a large percentage can. So if you cure some, the story ends!

Try a very inexpensive test or the remaining problems. Go to some place like Walmart and buy a couple of bottles of Tonic Water with Quinine. Make sure the bottles say it contains Quinine! It only costs about $1.00 per bottle. Have her drink about half a glass about 3 or 4 times per day. Notice if her remaining problem are much impoved. They just might be. If so you might email me at bearmountainscientific@comcast.net I would like to hear how it works for her.

****************************The doctors need to investigate the vaccinations all these girls have had, especially, the HPV, human papillomarvirus which is only administered to GIRLS. Side effects from vaccinations can come out years later and not just right away. Perhaps, all these girls were given the same batch of vaccinations? That batch might have been a bad batch or have some kind of chemical in them. All doctors are required to record the batch number, lot number of all vaccinations administered to patients. It seems odd that this is happening to only girls and not boys. Also, all these girls need to go on a strong dose of antibiotics, probably, Augmentin for at least 2 weeks. My daughter came down with PANDAS suddenly. A month later after the symptoms, she was put on Augmentin 500 tablets 2x a day. Within 3 days she was 70% better. She even started to get the tics before given antibiotics.. She was on antibiotics for 6 months. She has been off now for almost 6 months because she is seeing a natural science doctor. The doctor has helped her greatly rebuild her immune system.

this is not something you can fake when it goes on for days weeks months it takes a real toll on your body i seen for my self with my own daughter a couple years ago. except hers took her whole body and was a lot faster movements. if you were to see it for your self and really watch it for days you would know its not fake. stress can really show in different forms depending on the person and the type of stress.

Yes, it invades your brain....(toxoplasmosis, heavy metals) just like people on " the hoarders" show...how could they not have clue about what is happening around them???? They have been so brain washed/brain desenitized, that they don't have clue. If this is you....you have been taken too.
