I was born, bred, raised through Graduate School in Buffalo,NY. One of my cousins was hired to clean up The Love Canal debacle, and suffered severe diseases for over 10 yrs. I am a Board Certified Child Psychiatrist and have treated hundreds adolescents with Tourettes and severe seizure disorders for the past 30 yrs.I also did brain research for 3 yrs as an undergraduate Bio major, and did cancer research in graduate school. So I am familiar with epidemology. Are you aware that these tic disorders have been occurring for 2 yrs? A radio station in Batavia, NY (between Buffalo and Rochester and near Leroy), has been reporting on this for some time.. Radio station WBTA AM 1490, has been following this. They have a web site recording comments under Neurologist speaks abt Leroy HS "Tourettes". One comment stated that 2 teenage girls were there for 2 days, had lunch at a diner, and contracted the sx on their return to Illinois.
I disagree with having one physician addressing the issue.Different questions and experience could be quite useful. I would suggest an infectious disease doc, an epidemiologist, a toxicologist, a neurologist, an adolescent medicine doc, and a well trained Child Psychiatrist who will not jump to conversion disorder. Have they looked at their CSF? Have they done blood studies for immunological responces, toxins, heavy metals, abnormal WBCs, have they ruled out prions, Huntingtons Chorea, PANS,done MRIs,Pet scans. Pts with Tourettes often have extreme outbursts under stress. With meds and supportive tx they can suppress corporalia for awhile, but then have to release this in a physically painful way. I have noyed that the pattern of some of these girls differ. If you'l pardon me, for some there may be some secondary gain, but this does not rule out a physiologically based disorder. I would br curious to knoe if this sort of pattern has occurred elsewhere. Also, why only females, most Tourettes pts are male. Just my current thoughts, that if they are read, I hope could be helpful. It reminds m of the reported upsurge in ADHD dx. after WWI. What we discovered later, was that many of these pts. had after affects from the great flu epidemic of 1918, re: Oliver Sacks research with use of dopamine. Toxins of any sort can have lasting and puzzling effects, be they heavy metals, viruses,or pesticides.
I am with you on this, a team of Physicians should be involved to rule out all that you stated. I am also torn between increased experimenting with the incense or increased stress. I am continuing to follow this, research of similar cases that may come since these young women.
I saw a similar condition about 10 years ago. I am a Nurse it was concluded that the kids involved were subjected to a pesticide that was found on there clothing that came from China I believe. It was boys and girls that purchased jeans
I have worked with Tourettes I think people are looking at the symptoms and not really trying to find the root of the problem. I am going through my nursing notes that I have keep for the past 10 years to see what facility I was working
