Erin Brockovich uncovers possible break in medical mystery on 'Dr. Drew'

At least 15 high school students in Le Roy, N.Y. are suffering from the same mysterious illness that's causing Tourette-like outbursts.

In an eye-opening interview Friday night, environmental activist Erin Brockovich talked to HLN’s “Dr. Drew” about the findings in her own investigation.

“I think the first thing that hit me in my gut was, ‘well, you haven't necessarily ruled anything and everything in or out,’” she said. “It just seemed to be a very quick diagnosis.”

Brockovich explained how one of the affected family members received a note in their mailbox about a 1971 train derailment.

“The contaminated rock, fill and soil was used to build the new school,” she said. “We are still trying to corroborate that [story]."

She immediately researched the derailment, and discovered it had caused one ton of cyanide to spill and 45,000 gallons of Trichloroethylene (TCE).

“I have read and been involved in cases that we have that,” she said. “TCE can be associated with neurological disorders.”

Brockovich noted that the actual location of the site of derailment was four miles from the school.

“The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry did not get out to the spill sight until the 90s as did the EPA,” she said. “It took them 20 years to go out and investigate. So by the time they had gotten out there and investigated, this contamination was in the bedrock. They concluded … the concentrations are so heavy that this agency had to dilute those samples just to get a reading … They have a phenomenon that this agency has reported that every year where the water table rises, this bedrock is submerged and pulses of TCE and this contaminant comes out and goes into the groundwater, and it has created a plume in 1999. They confirmed that that plume was four miles to the East-Southeast, and at the leading edge of this groundwater plume - it was a mile wide.”

Dr. Drew questioned, “Four miles would put it right at the high school, would it not?”

Brockovich replied, “Yes.”

Dr. Drew continued, “It might even put it at the athletic field that's come into question where families have reported seeing strange things coming up.”

Brockovich responded, “Family has reported that there's an orange-yellow substance. It almost oozes from the ground - that’s on the children’s clothing – shoes - the equipment.”

Dr. Drew asked, “When they found it in '99, why didn't they do something about it?”

Brokovich replied, “In '99 they did. They were supposed to get into a pre-remedial design and looking at a soil vapor extraction system. [The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry] did a lot of detail here. They concluded the plume was not defined in '99 - that if it was not remediated. It would continue to go on indefinitely … I have never yet seen a case until today that it took an agency 20 years to respond.”

Brockovich also said that she has been inundated with e-mails from people across America and Le Roy.

"They reported several things of concern beyond just this, and that is that where the old school is, there is a creek, and there has been known chemical dumping, and some of the children report playing in that creek as children and uncovering 55 gallon barrels ... we don't know what - the [new] school has five natural gas wells underneath its property. What we're concerned about with that is not that these gas wells, which were not disclosed could be harming the kids, but it could be controlling migration of the plume ...it could be pulling it to them."

Dr. Drew concluded, “Even if it turns out this has nothing to do with the neurological symptoms the girls are having, we have a bigger story here. The things that Erin is uncovering definitely causes cancer and thousands of lives may be at risk here if we don't do something about this, or at least be sure this doesn't remain a risk for people."

Erin Brockovich will be sending a team to New York for further investigation. Be sure to watch the show weeknights at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and follow the show on Twitter @DrDrewHLN.

I'm interested if the fumes from the gas wells at the school have been investigated for neurotoxins. neurotoxins have been known to be used in some wells in the fracking process to extract the gas. this can leak into the groundwater and into the air. I wonder about this?

I totally agree.. About the gases.. But also.. these are High School Kids(Girls).. What if or whos to say they haven't taken something or been given something at a party or something that might be the cause...

I'd like to know why there appears to be a media-blackout on talking-about the question that so many on the www have been asking about this. Did these children receive vaccines in 2011? THAT IS ALL, (sorry for yelling), we want to know. What is the common-denominator, (or not), when it comes to vaccination history with the sick kids.
I know that it was reported that the HPV-vaccine was, "ruled-out", but that does not answer the question, does it?
This story was on the Today Show also, NO MENTION of vaccines. WHY? WHY CAN THE QUESTIONS NOT BE ASKED OR ANSWERED? WHO is telling the NATIONAL MEDIA NOT to talk-about VACCINES when they talk about this topic?

@Curious American – It seems that your mind is already made up as to the safety of vaccines, therefore I will not get into an argument about the 100's of millions distributed and spread out in the country and how many safety procedures and testings of the vaccines there are or how when my child or yours doesn't get smallpox, polio, measles, mumps, or rubela that THEY ARE A GOOD thing and save thousands and thousands of lives... I'm not going to argue this because you simply won't do the math in your head and see their benefit. You will go with your own biased research or conspiracy theories which make more plausible sense to you then the facts. There are always possibilities that when you break the skin barrier that something can get infected. It is also possible that vaccines have nothing to do with this and everything to do with the contamination they are referencing. I would rather trust statistical analysis than my personal beliefs. I also doubt that the boy that is reportedly affected by this got the HPV vaccine. I would also be surprised if general statistics about were legal to release but individual personal medical records were, well, individual and personal and protected by certain rights. I'm sure the families and their lawyers have already checked into the common denominators. If they haven't found anything easy yet, like vaccinations, then it probably will take more digging. Of course a nationally recognized Dr. isn't going to shoot accusations that are ungrounded into the air to be slammed by major pharmaceuticals for doing so. If he's a Western medicine doctor he most likely has a better understanding of the studies and research involved in getting these meds to market than you or I ever will...

@CuriousAmerican12..Really? Aren't we done reading the Jenny McCarthey trash yet? The unsubstantiated drivel that somehow vaccines are the source of everything from Tourette's to Autism to constipation is getting old very fast. As Greg pointed out 100s of millions of vaccines are handed out every year. If there is a clear connection you would not have 15 people in one area. It would be widespread and associated with a similar lot number on the vaccine. Kindly remove your head from your nether parts and leave your conspiracy theories somewhere else.

It was already proven by the British researcher who came up with the vaccine scare that it was a hoax so he could sell his own 'clean' vaccine. He admitted to this. There is no medical or scientific literature anywhere on Earth that links vaccines to illness, because this was a hoax and all his findings were falsified.

Vaccines do not cause illness. The doctor was trying to scam parents to push his own product. That's all.

You are a MORON. The connection between Vaccinations and Illness has been utterly debunked. Fu*ktards like you continue to maintain your willful ignorance of the data and are one of the MANY things that has led to the downfall of our culture. YOU, personally, by spreading your ignorant propaganda about vaccinations have the blood of thousands of dead children on your hands. YOU... PERSONALLY... And all of your ignorant, fu*ktard anti-vaccination buddies. I'd say that you are the one with the brain damage, but one must have a brain before it can be damaged. PLEASE educate yourself and stop listening to pseudoscientific nonsense being spouted from con-artists with dollar signs in their eyes as you mindlessly buy another of their books or pay to attend another of their seminars.

DOCTOR DREW. Did someone from, "legal" tell you that you are forbidden from mentioning vaccines in regard to this topic? WHY did you NOT mention that so many people online are asking and we still do not know what the children's vaccine history is. Vaccination info. is actually public information since it is mandatory for school although some states have exemption waivers available. IF any of the sick kids were exempt from being vaccinated, THAT would "rule-out" vaccine involvement, but for some reason NO ONE is reporting vaccine status. How about it Leroy, NY? Do you remember receiving any letters in August or before the start of the school-year mandating vaccines? Were ALL of the sick children given vaccinations, or NOT? Sorry but I believe that you can, "rule-out" vaccines about as much as I believe that the Mystery illness is "Mass Hysteria". I saw the HPV-vaccine take-down a cheerleading-squad while they were doing a stunt! It wasn't pretty and of-course everyone assumed that they had abused drugs or drank something. Unfortunately what had really happened was that someone had vaccinated them all like a herd of cattle. Their parents didn't even know! Something is very wrong if the national news media can't even discuss this.

Can you prove the creek and dump are responsible. or do you just want to side with this theory to support job-killing regulations. Thank God President Romney will reduce the power of the EPA. Chemical companies are better able to regulate their own pollution than any government agency.

thank you, dr. drew, for having ms. brockovich on your show. her environmental investigations will be valuable to the entire community. i also have a child (not in leroy) who literally changed overnight because of PANDAS. in the five years of managing his disease, i have met many other parents whose children also changed overnight, and none of these kids manifest the disease in exactly the same way. also, there are treatments, such as antibiotics, which work well for some PANDAS kids and not for others. to my knowledge there has never been a cluster of PANDAS like the leroy kids, but that doesn't mean there couldn't be– please don't be quick to rule out a novel PANDAS outbreak.

Brockovich is a scam artist and has already TRIED the

    school district fight:

"a judge has thrown out a lawsuit brought by

'celebrity legal crusader Erin Brokovich'. Apparently

Brockovich, trading on her totally unearned reputation

as an environmental crusader, tried to do the same

thing to the Beverly Hills Unified School District

that she did to Pacific Gas and Electric years ago.

Namely, advance false claims of cancer, get the public

revved up, and have a top tier lawyer game them for

    millions in 'damages.' "

She's been investigated for basically stealing excess

money from the PGE suit, in which not only did they

find her "firm" fabricated information (such as the

cancer rates) but pressured others living there to lie

for more money.. in the end some residents got next to

nothing, even with more serious illnesses – all under

investigation. She tried to barge into the Missouri

case and they tossed her butt out because she was

trying this stuff and they wouldn't lie about it, so

she left acting as if there was nothing going on and

    no real money involved.
    ______________________________________________________

    __________
    " From 1996 to 2008, 196 cancers were identified

among residents of the census tract that includes

Hinkley — a slightly lower number than the 224 cancers

that would have been expected given its demographic

characteristics, said epidemiologist John Morgan, who

conducted the California Cancer Registry survey.

The survey did not attempt to explain why any

individual in Hinkley contracted cancer, nor did it

diminish the importance of Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

cleaning up a plume of groundwater with elevated

levels of chromium 6, Morgan said.

"Now, many of the townspeople who sued complain their

awards were smaller than they deserved. Some have even

hired lawyers to get back excessive legal fees charged

to children. They say the attorneys kept their awards

for six months after the settlement money was

delivered, and that they didn’t receive interest on

it. They complain that there was little or no apparent

logic behind the varying amounts of money individual

plaintiffs received; some claim that the arbitrators

never even looked at their medical records."

      January 28, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
    • Seola

"Hinkley plaintiffs’ attorneys took some of the

arbitrators in the case on a steeply discounted

      Mediterranean luxury cruise. The fraternization

between the private judges and the plaintiffs’ lawyers

led California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald

George to begin a study of the business of

arbitration. And while Brockovich appears on “Oprah,”

some townspeople are preparing for a new round of

lawsuits — this time against their former lawyers,

      including Brockovich’s firm."

      January 28, 2012 at 3:07 pm |
    • Seola

EPA also weighed in: "Further, according to the Environmental Protection

Agency’s toxicology web site, "No data were located in

the available literature that suggested that

chromium-6 is carcinogenic by the oral route of

exposure." Indeed, "Exposure to chromium-6 in tap

water via all plausible routes of exposure," even in

extremely high concentrations, concluded the Journal

of Toxicology and Environmental Health, poses no

"acute or chronic health hazard to humans."
The true beneficiary of Erin Brockovich has the

initials "E.B." She pocketed a bonus of over $2

million in the Hinkley case, although many residents

who truly were sick (albeit not from chromium-6) never

      got a dime."

Erin Brockovich is an idiot. This is a classic example of a conversion disorder. There are many examples in history; the old name for this phenomenon is "mass hysteria". In the 50s there was an incident when schoolgirls all started fainting. There are numerous examples of hysterical blindness and pseudoseizures, for example. There is nothing wrong with these girls.

Erin B. is on the right track regarding a specific poison that is creating this illness. The neurotoxin, in my opinion, is coming from the spill, that she relates to, or unleashed burping of fracking gas. The irresponsible conclusion of attributing this illness to "mass hysteria" reminds me of the same conclusion quickly reached, when mass birds and fish suddenly died in the earthquake prone fracking town of Guy, Arkansas. "Mass hysteria", absolute nonsense, in my opinion and smelling of cover-up, also in my humble opinion. Thank goodness for the likes of Erin Brockovich. We need EPA and FDA officials and politicians of like mind to actually persevere and investigate in the open public. (I have noticed, what seems to be a possible pattern among 4 teenage girls (hormonal trigger?), who were not raised near each other, but were all born around and adopted from Guatamala City. They each have neurological serious debilitating issues that are very similar to each other. Their issues are manifesting in a different way with burning pain and numbness in the extremities along with sudden onset depression.) . May more mothers have the guts to demand that our government protect our children from the onslaught of out-of-control corporations, who simply regard the average citizen as peripheral damage on the corporate pursuit to enriching their CEOs and their investors. We are witnessing, presently such public and government apathy in regard to natural gas extraction and hydraulic fracturing. Make no mistake, this environmentally devastating industry will be knocking on your door, as the peacefull townsfolk in Colorado, Idaho and all those eastern and midwestern states have disovered by now. We must advocate for ourselves and for aour children, because no one else is on the lookout for us. Thankyou, Erin. Perhaps, yet again, you will help bring out the hidden truths.

My husband and I attended LeRoy HS from 1998 to 2002.....neither of us have any health problems. We had classes in the old high school building but used the same athletic field they are using now. Yes we heard of barrels in the creek, but they were empty and in a quickly flowing creek. Neither of us encountered the yellow orange goo on the athletic field that is being mentioned. The map they show during this segment is inaccuate. Where they are showing the train derailment there are no train tracks. She also says the plume went south southeast and the high school is clearly to the southwest. 4 miles southeast is the middle of nowhere. However, I will not say that there is not a possibilty of there being some type of contamination. Both my family and my husband's family moved to the area just before we started high school and we have moved to Philadelphia since graduation. Since we did not spend a significant length of time in LeRoy, we may have avoided potential health problems.

First, I want to tell the kids and their families my thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult challenge. This is totally unfair that you have to be subjected to this horrible situation. It am stunned that in addition to the personal physical trauma you have to endure, you also have to tolerate the 'opinions' that appear to want to shift the blame/responsibility to you as well. It sounds like artificial smoke and mirrors to lessen the impact of future legal actions. This is abusive.

Second, I am grateful Erin, Dr. Drew and others have assumed the role of advocacy for the girls and their families. Not allowing Erin's team to take their own soil samples to be tested by professionals of their choice, just makes the local public officials look like they are hiding the truth.

I have to comment on the negligent public officials who allowed the environmental contaminiation to continue for so long without effectively monitoring and agressively addressing health risks. At the time of the chemical spill, there was sufficient knowledge about the dangers of industrial chemical spills, resulting contamination and the significant risks to the health of people living in the area.

And did I hear right, that contaminated fill from the spill area was used as fill for the school? Criminal, at the very least. Who made all these decisions to expose the children and the neighborhoods to these poisons? Everyone involved in making these "agreements" should be identified and have their role described in the news media at the very least.

I am glad you have Dr. Drew and Erin in your court.
    .
Don't sign any legal agreements any time soon. I recommend very good attorneys. You may require significant healthcare for a long time.

Why doesn't anyone ask the girls if they were partying at the same place and time? This is a click of girls and good friends and kids are doing drugs all the time. I don't know the girls. It is just amazing that with huffing happening in the best of schools that Dr. Drew is not looking at drugs as a cause. One girl did get better. What did she stop doing that the other girls didn't? There is toxic waste everywhere. These girls all were exposed to the same chemical at the same time.

I live close to Leroy, and I'm a parent who is concerned as well. I have been following this story in all of our news. The sad thing is if it was my kids I would be doing everything in my power to protect them and find out what is happening. It didn't just happen to the local teens but an adult in the community has the same symptoms and problems that started in October as well. The community is has a good reputation and they don't want to ruin that understandable but the question is how many more really are there? Who won't come publicly with there symptoms cause they are scared. Our children are our legacy and our communities but we all need to think about our protection in many ways. Whatever it truely is we all want to know so we can take the precautions of protecting ourselves and others that we love.

Dr. Drew: Could these girls be given an antidote for cyanide poisoning? Upon researching I found just by breathing this chemical, symptoms could be convulsions, low blood pressure, confusion, and symptoms of Parkinson's Disease also as it is due to a neurological effect. Has any young men or boys shown and symptoms?

Dr Drew, I would like to add one more comment. I believe the reason the LeRoy School System would not let samples be collected from their premises, was because they see a law suit in the making and they may have encountered this in previous years and turned a blind eye. Question: In the history of this school has any previous similarities been reported by previous students/teachers? Thank You for exposing important issues.

I think it is important to keep an open mind. The individuals with this disorder may be suffering from conversion disorder or it may be an effect from an environmental disorder. I live in upstate NY although not near these cases but I am aware that there was some record flooding in upstate NY in September 2011 and perhaps the ground was saturated thus allowing these contaminates to be exposed. In any event I think all options should be exhausted and not just quickly dismissed as a mental disorder. The important thing to remember is that these individuals are suffering and want to find a cure

Kinda strange that she says the plume is moving east/south east, and the school is south WEST of the crash site. So it's moving away from the school. I live in LeRoy, I know all the areas she is talking about very well. Having been in the area of the spill many times, before and after the school was built I will say that if they took fill from there it wasn't much. As far as the ground water contamination and the plume moving towards the school.......get a map and read it! East is away from Leroy.

I work for a large state agency housed in a leased building. After moving into this building, employees have experienced varying degrees of illness. Despite having "enviornmental investigations" by state hired " professionals", the building always passes. The building even passed these environmental inspections although at the same time, the ceiling crawl space was infested with about 40 dead rats, flies, old rat nest debris and maggots. When the inspectors were scheduled to come, some staff were told to spread the word to avoid raising any dust so the building would pass the tests. !!! Some staff were afraid of being fired if they complained. The cleaning service was changed and we were supposed to get better service including vacuuming with HEPA filters. The areas occupied by the higher paid staff are vacuumed, with the old vacuum that still leaks dust out the back when it is being used. It is a constant battle just to get the staff who are responsible for calling the cleaning service to come out to make that phone call. But there is a much faster response if something needs to be covered up.

I'm wondering if all these young girls got the Gardasil vaccine around the same time. This vaccine has had major neurotoxic side effects and yet it is still being pushed by the FDA and our medical societies. Just a thought....

If the symptoms are caused by an environmental spill then why do only girls have exhibit the symptoms? Why not boys too?

HPV vaccine, recreational drugs, environmental contaminants, these all sound like potential causes..

need to stop focusing so much on developing fancy diagnoses and look at all the things that these kids were exposed to, and isolate a common denominator that can trigger these symptoms! and if its autoimmune shouldnt these kids all have elevated ANA? or something that can be definitively i.d.'d as autoimmune activity

They are not faking. Even if the spill wasn't the cause of the mystery illness, thank goodness it is being investigated. Dr Drew and Erin B. & all of HLN are doing an excellent job. Just thinking, maybe Thera, during her cheer-leading practices and at the games somehow was exposed to a higher concentration of toxic chemicals in the soil. Perhaps she took her shoes off. Other athletes are usually protected by uniforms, helmets, and football shoes. I think the area where the cheerleaders were should be checked. I am obviously NOT a chemist, but I think areas of toxins be stronger than others. A quote from Ann:
"And did I hear right, that contaminated fill from the spill area was used as fill for the school?"
Dear Ann, great blog, agree with all. How can we find out if the land fill from the spill was used at the school?

This isn't a vaccine or an anti-depressant. Whatever you are reading on the internet is obviously someone's biased blog. There have been billions of doses given and there has never been a case where a small town gets a whole bunch of kids that all start taking the drug at the same time, have it metabolize the same way, and have the reactions be the exact same.
As for all of you that are posting that this is all girls, and that it's the HPV vaccine. It's NOT all girls and therefore it's NOT the HPV vaccine so ENOUGH. Do your homework before you post comments that could end up influencing someone and ultimately make them develop a CANCER. Dingleberries!
I knew a group of perfectly normal kids in college that decided they were going to try mushrooms one night. All three were different ages, backgrounds, sizes, etc. 2 guys and one girl. They were never "normal" again after that night.
I'm not assuming that it's mushrooms. However, it's more likely that a bunch of teens experimented with a drug than it is that they all received some vaccine or pill and are the negative outcome of some pharmeceutical conspiracy...

Natural gas is a water gas. It contains a certain amount of water that can precipitate out due to temperature changes, etc.. in pipes. Witness the drip leg pipe found next to many nat. gas water heaters that appears to run down hill to no where, with a cap on the end of it. It catches condensed water drips & pipe trash before they have a chance to make it to your water heater controls & mess things up.
Does anyone know if the gas wells that are located on the school yard grounds have any sort of water separators on them to remove any ground water that might come up along with the nat. gas that they produce; & if so, what do they do with any separated water that might be removed (?) from the nat. gas produced by these wells? You wouldn't want to put ground water that might come up with the nat. gas, into nat. gas collector pipes for these school yard wells for any number of reasons. So where would any water that might be separated out end up going to -to a holding tank-or dumped on the ground- or into a sewer system that might serve the school as a sanitary sewer or into a sewer that drains it's parking lot, etc.to a creek-if water is separated out (on site) from the gas that comes out of these wells?
If TCE is present in water separated out from these wells, can it vaporize out of that water as a gas or is it simply contained to the waters local?
I do know that there was a TCE & PCB spill problem in the ground water at an arms manufacturing parts plant in Kansas City, Mo. & they ended up sinking water wells all around the bloom and pumping the water up and doing some sort of reverse osmosis filtration for years, to remove the chemicals that were in it, for proper disposal ( not that doing that brought back the many cancer victims who died that worked in or lived around that plants local )
Also, where is this city getting their drinking water from? Is it locally produced close to the TCE spill? They are far enough north, that the winters might be cold enough, that they might be adding 55 deg.well water to any ground water sources that they are using (as a water supply) in order to control their waters temperature (& pipe damage from thermal changes) as their water moves thru their systems. (obviously, more added in cold weather)
The railroad that was shipping this stuff and the EPA should have cleaned this mess up years ago. What kind of deadly craziness is this? God help those effected!

I listened to an afternoon medical show. One of the girls said her symptoms began in May. This is the time for nymphs lyme ticks. She was playing soccer. These are signs of lyme disease and co-infection. Ticks are an epidemic and are moving more inland now. With most of the tics they are having itcould bethe same co-INFECTION.
